Protecting and invigorating our cultural heritage is a central focus of NAC. One step we have taken toward this goal is the establishment of a cultural heritage management system. In collaboration with Environmental Systems Solutions (ESS), we have developed an interactive database that has the capacity to collect, store, protect and share cultural information such as place names, stories, songs, language, and an array of traditional ecological knowledge, including the Njanjma Seasonal Calendar.

ESS is also helping us to increasingly use this cultural information to direct our operations, especially in terms of how we look after country. In a recent project Rangers worked with Traditional owners and ESS to record traditional place names, which will be used by the Rangers as the foundation on which they plan, schedule, prioritise and report on work.
